WHY AFFAIRS HAPPEN
THERE ARE MANY REASONS WHY AFFAIRS OCCUR.
It can occur in happy relationships, as well as troubled relationships. Lack of affection towards your partner can lead to infidelity. This is often a red flag as well if your partner is not as present as they once were. Loss of fondness and caring can occur in relationships where the relationship is unbalanced – where one person is a giver and one person is a taker. This is often symbolic of unbalanced or unhealthy boundaries in the relationship. Again, when it comes to boundaries poor communication can lead to a breakdown in having your emotional needs met.
Physical health issues, such as chronic pain or disability as well as mental health issues, including depression, anxiety or bipolar disorder can lead to infidelity. Addiction, including addiction to sex, love, romance, gambling, drugs or alcohol can also lead to infidelity. These issues often result in one partner not getting their emotional or physical needs met.
Unaddressed marital problems, such as fear of intimacy or fear or conflict avoidance can result in infidelity. Life cycle changes, including transitions from parenthood to empty nesting can be a factor. Finally stressful periods where partners are separated for long periods of time. Personal dissatisfaction and low self-esteem can be contributing factors as well.
